Talhah Netherlin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and
Jaylen Walters (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) both netted the first goals of their collegiate careers on Saturday evening, but a big offensive outburst from Rutgers-Camden carried the Scarlet Raptors to a 6-2 victory over Keystone College at the Gilmore Alumni Classic hosted by Rowan University.
Rutgers-Camden (1-1) opened the scoring in the 15
th minute of Saturday's contest when Clayton Taylor scored off an assist from Vincenzo Masitti. Keystone leveled the contest in the 20
th minute as the Giants earned a penalty kick which Netherlin converted to make it a 1-1 game.
The game turned in the Scarlet Raptors' favor in the 22
nd minute when a Keystone player was sent off and Rutgers-Camden went ahead on the ensuing set piece as the Giants misplayed the ball resulting in an own goal and a 2-1 lead for the Scarlet Raptors.
Up a goal and a man, the Scarlet Raptors scored three goals in a span of just 3:31 to claim a 5-1 advantage by the 35
th minute as Skyler Diggs, Brad Maine, and Darnell Brown all scored during the run.
Diggs pushed the Rutgers-Camden advantage to 6-1 in the 65
th minute by netting his second goal of the game before Walters closed out the scoring in the 82
nd minute by knocking home a rebound of a shot from
Rolando Rodriguez (Linden, N.J./Linden).
For the game, Rutgers-Camden held a 23-11 advantage in shots including a 13-3 lead in shots on goal. The Scarlet Raptors also claimed a 10-4 edge in corner kicks.
James Brett picked up the win in net for Rutgers-Camden after making one save over the first 64:39 while Kieran Burns did not make a save in 25:21 of action.
Steven Heintz, Jr. (Ardsley, Pa./Abington) suffered the loss in the Giants' net despite making seven saves in the contest.
Keystone will look for its first win of the young season on Wednesday night with a non-conference game at the Pennsylvania College of Technology. Opening kickoff between the Giants and Wildcats is set for 6:00 p.m. in Williamsport.
