Scranton, Pa. –
Malley Bowen (Owego, N.Y./Tioga Central) became just the second player in Keystone College volleyball history to record 1,000 career assists on Saturday as the Giants dropped a pair of non-conference matches at the University of Scranton. Keystone dropped a three-set decision to the host Royals in Saturday's opener before falling to Mount Saint Vincent in three sets in the nightcap.
Bowen reached the milestone in Saturday's second match against the Dolphins to join Keystone's all-time leader Carol Mosier who totaled 2,123 assists from 2012-2015.
Match 1 vs. Scranton
In Saturday's opening match against Scranton (16-1), the Royals claimed the opening set 25-17 before escaping with a tight 25-22 decision in the second set. The hosts then closed out their 16
th victory in 17 matches this fall with a 25-19 victory in third frame.
Kristin Kirwan and Victoria Cagogna had nine kills apiece to lead Scranton while Kindler Norman put up a match-best 30 assists. Regina Schetroma picked up 14 digs for the Royals, who hit .250 as a team in the win.
Nathalie Ortiz (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) and
Nicole Frascati (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) collected six kills each to pace Keystone's attack while Bowen handed out 18 assists. Ortiz also had three blocks to lead all players in the match.
Victoria Homfeld (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) had a team-high 11 digs while
Taylor Beatty (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) added nine digs against the Royals.
Bowen and
Nicki Yeager (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) served up a pair of aces each in the contest for the Giants.
Match 2 vs. Mount Saint Vincent
In Saturday's second match against Mount Saint Vincent (5-6) came out firing on all cylinders and cruising to a 25-8 win in the opening set. Keystone came back strong in the second game, but was edged out 26-24 before the Dolphins closed out their second win of the day with another decision in the third frame, 25-22.
Tara Maloney put down a match-high 14 kills for Mount Saint Vincent, who got 11 kills from Dez Brown. Nicole Henderson led all players with 31 assists in the match while Sayde McDermott pick up a match-best 16 digs for the Dolphins, who hit .233 as a team in the win.
Beatty led Keystone with nine kills while Frascati added six kills in the match for Keystone, which posted a .075 hitting percentage in the defeat.
Bowen dished out 23 assists, the last of which was the milestone 1,000
th of her career.
Homfeld picked up nine digs to go along with a pair of aces while Bowen and
Kristen Larkin (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) totaled seven digs apiece against the Dolphins.
