Aston, Pa. – Playing a man short for the final 95 minutes of Saturday's Colonial States Athletic Conference men's soccer at Neumann University, Keystone College gutted out a 0-0 double overtime time to earn a hard-fought point on the road. The Giants, who were led by
Malcom Moreira (Hillside, N.J./St. Benedict Prep)'s 10 saves in net, move to 6-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play while the Knights go to 4-4-1 this fall and 2-0-1 in league contests.
In a rematch of last year's first round CSAC playoff game which Neumann won with late-game goal, Keystone found itself a man short just 14 and a half minutes into the contest after having a player sent off.
Despite being a man down after the red card, the Giants nearly went ahead midway through the opening half, but
Carlos Bonilla (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge)'s one-time volley off a cross was denied by a fine reflex save from Knights' goalkeeper Perry Corsetti.
At the other end, Moreira came up big for Keystone, making four saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless at halftime with Neumann holding a 7-3 advantage in shots over the opening 45 minutes of play.
The Knights had the better of play in the second half, outshooting the Giants 13-5 and had the only three shots on goal in the frame, but Moreira was up to the task each time to send the game to overtime after 90 minutes of regulation was unable to produce a goal.
Despite being a man down, Keystone controlled the first period of extra time and took all four shots in the period, but were unable to find the game-winner as Corsetti stopped Bonilla for second time in the lone shot on goal in the 10-minute stanza.
Momentum swung back to the Knights in the second overtime frame as the hosts fired off six of the eight shots in the period, but Moreira came up with three more big stops to preserve the tie of Keystone.
Neumann finished the contest with a 26-14 advantage in shots and a 10-2 lead in shots on goal. The visitors, who got a pair of saves from Corsetti in the shutout, also held a slim, 10-8 lead in corner kicks.
Bonilla's five shots led the Giants,
Talhah Netherlin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) attempted three shots, and
Daniel Zuniga (Lakeland, Fla./McKeel Academy) and
Jaylen Walters (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) were credited with a pair of shots each in the draw.
Keystone will next host Cabrini University on Tuesday night in a CSAC tilt starting at 7:00 p.m. on the turf field in La Plume.
