IMMACULATA, Pa.—Immaculata University scored seven straight goals in the opening 12 minutes of play to defeat Keystone College, 20-7, in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore attacker Layne Kennedy and freshman midfielder Maura Murray combined for eight goals and two assists and senior midfielder Hannah Verrecchia finished with three goals and two assists as the Mighty Macs improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Immaculata, which held a 50-18 advantage in shots, also received three goals and an assist from senior attacker Rosemarie Reitman, two goals apiece from senior midfielder Brittany Whaley and sophomore defender Anna DiDonato, and four assists from senior attacker Nicole Dominick.
Keystone, now 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the CSAC, was led by senior midfielder
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) with two goals and an assist and sophomore
Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) and senior Nina
Hodanich chipped in two goals apiece.
Donato scored twice during the early run before Hodanich ended the streak with a goal for Keystone with 16:23 remaining before intermission. Kennedy then answered for the Mighty Macs with back-to-back goals within a 34-second span to spark a 5-2 rally that propelled Immaculata to a 12-3 halftime lead.
Keystone sliced the lead to 13-5 early in the second half on goals by Hodanich and Hawkins before Immaculata answered with a 5-1 spurt to push its lead to 18-6 with 11 minutes remaining.
Sophomore Emily Schumann made six saves in goal for the Mighty Macs while Keystone's
Daphne Leenas (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) was credited with a game-high 11.
Junior midfielder
Nisa Cortes (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) finished with three ground balls and three caused turnovers for Keystone, which will return to action next Wednesday, March 21, against Wells College in Aurora, New York, starting at 4:00 p.m.
