On a day more conducive for curling, Keystone College dropped a non-conference doubleheader to The University of Scranton at Magis Field in the Kevin P. Quinn, SJ, Athletics Campus Tuesday evening.
In mid-30 degree temperature and snow flurries at times, the Royals found a way to get it done, belting out 12 hits, including three from freshman catcher Mackenzie Duffy, on their way to an 11-3 victory in six innings in the opener. Scranton won the second game, 7-0 in six innings, on the strength of a combined eight-strikeout performance by pitchers Jennifer Sweeney and Meaghan Dowdell.
With the wins, Scranton improves to 21-5 while Keystone falls to 7-21.
Game 1 – Scranton overcame an early 1-0 deficit by scoring three runs in the first inning and extended its lead to 6-2 after three innings. Sophomore Casey DeSarno drove in three runs and winning pitcher Morgan Rentzheimer and designated player Anna Price contributed two hits apiece. Of Scranton's 12 hits, six went for extra-bases, including a triple by Duffy. Rentzheimer improved to 9-4 on the mound by striking out six batters and allowing only two earned runs.
Keystone took its lead on a sacrifice fly by freshman
Paige Mokychic (Beaumont, Pa./Tunkhannock Area), and the Giants added another run in the second when sophomore Kassadi Wood walked, advanced to second on a single by sophomore
Mariah Loughney (Jermyn, Pa./Lakeland), and scored on a single by senior
Kaylee Hartman (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional). Keystone scored again in the fifth when Mokychic drew a two-out walk and scored on a double by Lloyd, who finished with two of the Giants' five hits.
Game 2 – Freshman Jennifer Sweeney belted a two-run home run in the first inning and sophomore Megan Zinn finished with three hits and scored three times as the Royals bolted out to a 6-0 lead after three innings. Zinn drove the game's first run with a double and Sweeney finished with three RBIs. They combined for five of Scranton's seven hits.
Lloyd and senior
Ryleigh Fitch (Springville, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) each belted a double for Keystone, but the Giants weren't able to push a run across the plate. Hartman, Loughney, and sophomore
Samantha Monetti (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) recorded Keystone's other three hits.
The game was called in the sixth inning due to the weather conditions.
Keystone will return to action tomorrow afternoon against King's College in a non-conference doubleheader at Betzler Field in Wilkes Barre Township, Pennsylvania, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
