La PLUME, Pa.—This Saturday promises to be a special day for the Keystone College women's lacrosse team.
Not only will the Giants honor seniors
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) and
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) before their regular-season finale against Gwynedd Mercy at the Athletic Field and Track Complex at 1 p.m., Keystone will be also be accepting donations as part of its commitment to Autism awareness.
April is Autism Awareness Month, and organizations around the country are helping to spread the word about it through events and other efforts. According to WebMD, Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder that often interferes with a person's ability to communicate with and relate to others.
Hawkins and Hodanich have played an integral role in the development of the women's lacrosse program, leading Keystone to back-to-back Colonial States Athletic Conference tournament berths (2017, 2018) in just the fourth year of the program's existance.
Hawkins is the Giants' all-time leader in goals (147), assists (56), total points (203), and draw controls (157). She is the first player in Keystone history to reach the 100 and 200-point plateaus and the first and only player to score at least 100 goals. In addition to reaching 200 points in last Wednesday's game at Marywood, she also set a Giant single-game record with six assists. She is a two-time second team all-Colonial States Athletic Conference selection (2016, 2017) and CSAC all-Academic team recipient (2017).
Hodanich joined Hawkins in the 100-point club on Saturday, April 7, by scoring five goals and assisting on two others in the Giants' 20-0 win at Centenary. She holds the Giants' record for most ground balls in a career (114) and is second all-time in goals (93), assists (24) and total points (117). In 2016, Hodanich earned honorable mention all-CSAC in a ballot conducted among the league's head coach. She also played three seasons of basketball at Keystone, finishing with 619 points, 256 rebounds, 120 assists, 115 steals and 22 blocks in 66 games over a three-year period.
Saturday's game will also have ramifications in the CSAC standings, as both Keystone and Gwynedd Mercy are now tied for 5
th place with records of 3-4 in conference play. The winner will be the fifth seed and travel to the number four seed for a quarterfinal game on Saturday, April 28, while the loser will be the sixth seed and will travel to take on the number three seed.
