LA PLUME, Pa.- The Keystone College softball team swept CSAC rival Wilson College 3-1 in game one and walked off game two 5-4 in eight innings Sunday afternoon. With the sweep, Keystone moves to 7-13 (6-4 CSAC). Wilson drops to 9-15 (3-7 CSAC). This is the first time in program history that Keystone softball swept Wilson.
Game One: Keystone 3; Wilson 1
Wilson got on the board first when a runner on third scored off a pass ball in the top of the first inning. Keystone was able to get into the scoring column when they scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth off an error from the Wilson second baseman. Two innings later, the Giants scored on another fielding error by the Phoenix third basemen.
Courtney Cienki (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) got the win in the circle as she pitched a complete game tossing seven innings with six strikeouts. Isabella Benitez (East Windsor, N.J./Hightstown) and Brooke Staple (Carbondale, Pa./Carbondale Area) went 2-for-3 on the day.
Game Two; Keystone 5; Wilson 4 (8 innings)
The second game of the doubleheader ended up being an exciting one. The first two innings were scoreless until the bottom of the third when Keystone tallied three runs. The Phoenix answered with three runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning.
The game eventually went into extra innings where Wilson capitalized on an RBI single to take a 4-3 lead. Keystone answered immediately with an RBI single by Jordan Frye (Cheltenham, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) to score Isabella Mandarano (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore). The hero of the game would be Benitez who would hit a SAC fly to center field to bring home the winning run and complete the series sweep.
Clare Johns (Skippack, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) earned her third win of the season as she tossed a complete game as well. The right-handed pitcher went the whole eight innings with no walks and three strikeouts. Offensively, the Giants were led by Mandarano, Frye, and Benitez who all tallied three hits. Frye and Benitez finished with two RBI.
