Turnovers Trouble Giants as Rutgers–Newark Pulls Away

LA PLUME, Pa.- The Keystone College women's basketball team wrapped up their five game homestand with a 77-53 loss to Rutgers-Newark Tuesday evening.

The Giants trailed 14–13 after a competitive opening quarter in which Aaliyah Barnes (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) set the tone early with eight points on perfect shooting. Rutgers–Newark seized control before halftime, outscoring Keystone 19–6 in the second quarter and forcing 15 first-half turnovers that repeatedly turned into points on the other end. By the break, the Scarlet Raiders had built a 33–19 lead and all the momentum they needed.

Keystone found its offensive rhythm again in the third quarter, scoring 19 points behind the aggressive play of Phaneirra Barnett (Baltimore, Md./Edgewood) and Krista Cortazar (Throop, Pa./Mid Valley), but each time the Giants made a push, Rutgers–Newark responded.

Quanajah Felder's scoring bursts and Arlenny Medina's drives kept the visitors in front, and Rutgers–Newark shot 57 percent in the third to prevent any serious rally. The Scarlet Raiders ultimately pushed their lead to as many as 24 in the fourth.

Barnett was a bright spot for Keystone, finishing with 12 points and seven rebounds while going 6-for-8 at the line. Barnes led the Giants with 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Cortazar added 12 points off the bench.

Felder paced Rutgers–Newark with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Medina added 16 and Nicole Timario chipped in nine points and five assists.

Turnovers were the defining factor for the Giants as they committed 29 giveaways, which Rutgers–Newark flipped into 30 points. The Scarlet Raiders also controlled the glass with a 46–35 rebounding advantage.

Keystone (0-5) hits the road for the first time this season as they face The City College of New York on Friday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m.
