Men’s Basketball Drops High-Scoring Affair to Brandywine

MEDIA, Pa.- The Keystone College men's basketball team fell 95-82 to Penn State Brandywine on Wednesday evening at the Brandywine Commons Gym in a high-scoring conference matchup.

The Giants opened the game with a brief 2-0 lead on a pair of free throws from PJ Murphy (Scranton, Pa./Scranton), but Penn State Brandywine quickly settled in behind its perimeter shooting.

The Nittany Lions used a 9-3 spurt to take an 11-5 advantage midway through the first half, forcing Keystone to play from behind for much of the night.

Keystone answered with a strong stretch fueled by Niame Scott (Philadelphia, Pa./Mount Pleasant), who scored 12 first-half points, and Jden Golding (Jacksonville, Fla./Clay), who knocked down a three-pointer and converted multiple trips to the line.

Scott's three-pointer with 6:59 remaining in the half pulled the Giants to 35-30, and moments later he gave Keystone its first lead since the opening minutes with another triple to make it 37-36.

The teams traded baskets over the final minutes of the half, but Penn State Brandywine closed on a 9-5 run, capped by a three-pointer from Amari Little in the final 30 seconds, to take a 47-42 lead into the locker room.

Penn State Brandywine carried that momentum into the second half, opening on a 7-2 run to extend its lead to 52-44. Keystone continued to battle, trimming the deficit to six on a layup by Ahmodrion Jones (Wilmington, Del./Delcastle Tech), but the Nittany Lions again answered from beyond the arc. Consecutive three-pointers by Little and Bryan Warren pushed the margin to 61-48 with just under 15 minutes remaining.

The Giants briefly found a spark as Murphy drilled a three-pointer and Scott added a layup to cut the lead to 64-53, but Penn State Brandywine seized control with an 11-2 run highlighted by another three from Little and a layup by Isaiah Johnson.

Keystone continued to compete down the stretch, with Golding scoring 13 of his 24 points in the second half and Jones adding 14 of his 19 after halftime.

The Giants pulled within 12 points on two occasions, the last coming at 78-66 with just over six minutes remaining, but Penn State Brandywine answered each push, including a three-pointer by Ahmaar Godhania and a series of free throws to keep the cushion intact.

Golding led Keystone with a game-high 24 points and eight rebounds, going 7-for-9 at the free throw line. Jones finished with 19 points, Murphy added 14 points and four rebounds, and Scott also scored 14 points off the bench.

Jeramiah Maxwell-Lawus (Philadelphia, Pa./Belmont Charter) contributed seven points and three rebounds, while Demetrius Thomas (Atlanta, Ga./North Clayton) grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Penn State Brandywine was paced by Amari Little's 27 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-6 from three-point range. Ja'bri White added 25 points and nine rebounds, while Ahmaar Godhania chipped in 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from deep. Jaden Fogg filled the stat sheet with six points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists.

The Nittany Lions finished the night shooting 52.4 percent from the field and 52.0 percent from three-point range, compared to Keystone's 31.6 percent from beyond the arc.

Penn State Brandywine also held a 40-27 rebounding advantage and scored 26 second-chance points. Both teams committed 15 turnovers, but the Nittany Lions converted Keystone's miscues into 26 points.

Keystone shot an efficient 49.1 percent overall and went 22-for-28 at the free throw line, but the Giants were unable to keep pace with the Lions' perimeter shooting and work on the glass.

Keystone (4-14, 2-5 United East) hosts Notre Dame of Maryland University on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m.
