MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Keystone Giants split a sun-filled doubleheader Wednesday in Myrtle Beach, falling to Covenant 8–1 in a 9 a.m. opener before rebounding with a 7–2 victory over Penn State Schuylkill in the afternoon.
Covenant 8, Keystone 1 (Game 1)
Covenant scored early and consistently to hand Keystone a loss in the first game of the twinbill.
The Scots jumped ahead in the first inning when Madison Taylor singled and later scored on Julie Mavity's RBI triple down the left-field line. Cassidi Phillips followed with an RBI single to make it 2–0.
Covenant added two more runs in the second inning as Taylor doubled to left-center to drive in Gracie Lacle, and Mavity delivered another triple to extend the lead to 4–0.
The Scots increased their advantage in the fifth on an RBI single from Elizabeth Yother and a sacrifice fly by Cailey Barnett. Mavity added another RBI single in the sixth, and Covenant pushed the lead to 8–0 in the seventh when Yother drove in Lily Campbell.
Keystone broke through in the bottom of the seventh to avoid the shutout. Isabella Benitez (East Windsor, N.J.) singled through the left side, advanced to second on a fielding error and scored on the play for the Giants' lone run.
Benitez and Shalimar Lopez Ramirez (Baltimore, Md.) each recorded hits for Keystone.
Keystone 7, Penn State Schuylkill 2 (Game 2)
Keystone bounced back in the afternoon game, using timely hitting and a complete-game effort from Aimee Lyons (Ajax, ON) to defeat Penn State Schuylkill.
Lyons went the distance, allowing two runs — one earned — on eight hits while striking out one to earn the win.
The Giants generated offense throughout the lineup while pressuring the Nittany Lions with aggressive baserunning. Benitez scored twice and stole two bases, and Briana Aponte (El Paso, Tex.) added a hit, a walk and a stolen base.
Clara Sandly (Taylor, Pa.) highlighted the offense with a triple and two RBIs. Krista Cortazar (Throop, Pa.) and Bianca Markovitch (Scranton, Pa.) also drove in runs as Keystone built its lead.
Penn State Schuylkill collected eight hits but managed just two runs against Lyons, who prevented the Nittany Lions from stringing together sustained rallies.
Keystone finished with six hits and seven runs — five driven in — and capitalized on four Lions errors to secure the afternoon victory and earn a split of the day's doubleheader.
