Toronto, Canada – Former Keystone College baseball standout Nelson Gomez represented Puerto Rico at the recent Pan Am Games, helping lead the squad to a fourth place finish in the tournament that wrapped up this past weekend. Gomez played in three games and batted .333 with four hits including one home run and a pair of RBIs.
Puerto Rico finished fourth in the 16-team tournament after being edged out in the bronze medal game by Cuba, who mounted a dramatic ninth-inning comeback to claim third place on Sunday. Puerto Rico advanced to the semifinal round by going 4-2 in the preliminary round with wins over the eventual silver medalist United States (10-9), the Dominican Republic (12-6), Columbia (8-7), and Nicaragua (5-3) while suffering losses to Cuba (8-1) and eventual gold medalist Canada (11-4).
Gomez was instrumental in leading Puerto Rico to an upset of the United States in the opening for both teams of tournament, going 2-3 at the plate with a walk while hitting a key solo home run in the sixth inning as Puerto Rico would go on to edge the eventual silver medalists in 10 innings. Gomez then went 1-4 in the preliminary round loss to Cuba before going 1-5 with an RBI and a run scored in the team's win over the Dominican Republic. Defensively, Gomez posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with 26 putouts while playing all three of his games at first base.
Gomez played at Keystone from 2005-2008 and was twice named the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Player of the Year (2007 and 2008) and was a three-time First Team All-NEAC selection. In 2008, Gomez was named to the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional All-Tournament Team and was also honored as a D3baseball.com Second Team All-American.
Gomez is Keystone's all-time leader in career home runs with 34 and ranks second all-time in program history with a .438 career batting average for the Giants. Gomez holds single-season records for RBIs (70) and total bases (148), both set in 2008.
