La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College's baseball team is making its final preparations before traveling to Appleton, Wisconsin later this week for the 2016 NCAA Division III College World Series. The Giants earned their second trip to the World Series, an eight-team tournament from which the national champion will be crowned, by winning the New England Regional Tournament this past weekend.
Keystone's baseball team is looking for the first NCAA Division III national championship in any sport in school history. The only previous national title for the Giants came in 2004 when the men's golf team won the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championship.
Keystone (37-9) opens the tournament against St. John Fisher College (38-11) on Friday at 4:30 p.m., CST (5:30 p.m., EST) who is making its first-ever appearance in the World Series after winning the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament at PNC Field. The winner of Friday's contest will play at 7:45 p.m. on Saturday while the losing team will play an elimination game at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Keystone has won three of the previous four meetings against St. John Fisher. In the last meeting between the Giants and Cardinals on March 29, 2015, Keystone swept a doubleheader from St. John Fisher at Christy Mathewson Field in La Plume with wins of 7-4 and 5-3.
The Giants, led by 15-year head coach
Jamie Shevchik, enter the World Series tournament riding a 10-game winning streak including a perfect, 7-0 mark in postseason games. Keystone won three-straight conference playoff games to claim its eighth-consecutive Colonial States Athletic crown before sweeping through four games undefeated to win NCAA New England Regional bracket.
Keystone went 2-2 in its only previous appearance in the NCAA Division III Collegiate World Series in 2011. The Giants opened with a 2-1 win over Western New England University before falling to Buena Vista University, 8-5. Keystone then defeated Salisbury University 7-2 to move within one game of reaching the national championship tilt, but was defeated by eventual champion Marietta College, 11-2.
The World Series format is slightly different this year than in 2011. Last year, the NCAA changed the format of the eight-team tournament by dividing the group into two, four-team pools with the winner of each pool advancing to a best-of-three series to determine the national champion.
Keystone is in Pool B with St. John Fisher, La Roche College, and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Pool A includes defending national champion Cortland State University, Emory College, Emory University, Trinity (Tx.) University, and University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
All games will be played at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wisconsin for the 17
th consecutive year. This spring's World Series is being co-hosted by University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Lawrence University.
The NCAA Division III Baseball Championship will hold an Opening Ceremony Barbecue during the event's Opening Ceremony on May 26 at Neuroscience Group Field.
