La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College's men's soccer team will take on Cabrini University on Saturday afternoon in the Colonial States Athletic conference championship game. Opening kickoff between Giants and Cavaliers is set for 1:00 p.m. at Cabrini's Edith Robb Dixon Field in Radnor, Pennsylvania.
The winner of Saturday's contest will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Keystone, the #2 seed in this fall's postseason tournament, sports a 13-4-1 overall record on the year and is making its first-ever appearance in the CSAC final. The Giants advanced to Saturday's title match with a 3-1 victory over #3 Centenary University in a semifinal matchup on Thursday night in La Plume.
Ibrahim Tounkara (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area),
Frank Heter III (Andover, N.J./Newton), and
Khadim Thiam (New York, N.Y./Washington Irving) tallied Keystone's goals while
Steven Heintz, Jr. (Ardsley, Pa./Abington) made three saves in net to pick up the win.
Keystone enters Saturday's contest on a seven-game winning streak, the second-best run in program history. The Giants' 13 wins this fall are the most for the program since the 2002 squad went 14-3-1 while this year's win total is the most since Keystone began competing at the NCAA Division III level in 2004. The Giants have also set program-best NCAA marks for points, goals, and assists this fall.
Keystone is led by fifth-year head coach
Joe Schneck, who was named the CSAC Coach of the Year following the end of the regular season. The Giants racked up nine year-end conference this fall with Thiam,
Carlos Bonilla (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge), and
Jalen Freeman (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) earning First Team All-CSAC accolade with Bonilla (Rookie of the Year) and Freeman (Defensive Player of the Year) winning major awards.
Tounkara and
Talhah Netherlin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) were Second Team All-CSAC selections while Heintz was picked to the CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
Keystone's high-powered offense features five players that have recorded at least 10 points and eight players with eight points or more. Bonilla paces the squad with 22 points on seven goals and eight assists, Netherlin had contributed five goals and five assists, and Tounkara has added 14 points on six goals and two helpers.
Thiam has scored five goals and added two assists for 12 points while
Kouassi Kouadio (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) has totaled 10 points on three goals and four assists this fall.
Heintz and
Malcom Moreira (Hillside, N.J./St. Benedict Prep) have split goalkeeping duties for the Giants this fall, combining for a 1.37 goals-against average and seven shutout. Moreira has started 12 games, logging a 7-3-1 record with a 1.32 goals-against average, a .775 save percentage, and four clean sheets. In six starts, Heintz has posted a 5-1 record with a 1.47 goals-against average, a .791 save percentage, and three shutouts.
Cabrini, the top-seed in the CSAC playoffs, enters Saturday's title match with a 9-8-1 overall record. The Cavaliers advanced to the championship game by edging #4 Neumann University 1-0 in Thursday's other semifinal in Radnor with Jared Irwin netting the game's only goal on a penalty kick in the first half. Mike Gould made three saves to post the shutout victory in net for Cabrini.
The Cavaliers, coached by sixth-year head coach Rob Dallas, are making their third-straight appearance in the CSAC championship game while playing in their 11
th conference title match overall. Cabrini dropped a 3-0 decision at Centenary in last year's final after topping Marywood University 2-1 at home in the 2015 championship game. The Cavaliers have won five CSAC titles.
Cabrini had seven players earn All-CSAC honors this fall, led by First Team selections Irwin, Xavier Young, and Ben Roda. Gould, Sal Zampirri, Jr., Matt Ochman, and Andre Justin were each Second Team honorees.
Irwin leads the Cavaliers in scoring this fall with six goals while Roda (2 goals, 6 assists) and Ochman (3 goals, four assists) have 10 points apiece for Cabrini, who is averaging 1.43 goals scored per game this fall.
Gould has seen the majority of time in net for the Cavaliers, posting a 7-6-1 record with a 1.24 goals-against average and five solo shutouts.
Cabrini won the regular season between the two teams on October 3 at Keystone, 2-0. Kostas Slikas scored in the 43
rd minute and Justin tallied in the 64
th minute for the Cavaliers, who posted the clean sheet behind three saves from Gould. The teams both attempted 14 shots apiece that evening with Cabrini holding a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. The Giants held a commanding 11-4 adavntage in corner kick chances in the loss to the Cavaliers.
The setback to Cabrini was Keystone's last loss as the Giants have scored at least two goals in all seven of their victories during their current winning streak.
