Just two weeks ago, the Keystone College men's basketball team found itself undefeated in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play and tied for the top spot in the league standings.
Since then, the Giants have dropped three of four games to fall to fifth place, just one game ahead of Immaculata University and two in front of Marywood University in the race to secure one of the top six spots for the upcoming CSAC tournament.Â
Nevertheless, Keystone is still just a half-game behind Neumann University and Rosemont College for third-place, one and a half games behind second-place Gwynedd-Mercy, and only two back of league-leader Cabrini College.
The Giants can turn their fortunes around this Saturday, January 20, when they take on Cairn University in Lansdowne, Pa., starting at 3:00 p.m.
It won't be easy, however, as the Highlanders gave Keystone all it could handle in the first meeting between both teams on January 3 at the Gambal Athletic Center in LaPlume.  The Giants held off a late rally to defeat Cairn, 77-76, a game in which Keystone lead by 10 with over six minutes remaining and by eight with two minutes left. Down the stretch, the Highlanders missed their final four shot attempts after cutting the deficit to one with 59 seconds remaining.
Cairn, now 5-9 overall and 2-7 in the CSAC, features one of the league's top all-around players in sophomore guard
Malachi Hall, who currently averages 17.4 points per game while shooting nearly 56 percent from the field. He also pulls down nearly six rebounds a game.
For Keystone, the play of sophomore guard
Perry Belcher (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) has been a bright spot during a tough stretch recently. Â In his last four games, he is shooting nearly 56 percent from the field on his way to averaging nearly 13 points and seven rebounds.Â
Following Saturday's game, the Giants get another golden opportunity to move up into the CSAC standings when they host Gwynedd-Mercy Monday, January 22, at 7:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center in LaPlume.
