Giants to open CSAC playoffs Monday at Neumann

Keystone to make first conference tournament appearance since 2014

Fuhgeddaboudit!

That's what Keystone College head men's basketball coach Brad Cooper might be telling his team after Saturday's loss at Rosemont.

For the Giants, keeping their focus on this Monday's Colonial States Athletic Conference first-round game against Neumann University in Aston, Pennsylvania, is what's truly important, the first of three steps towards a conference title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championships.

Cooper has reason to be optimistic.  Keystone split its regular-season games against the Knights, winning 91-80 at home on December 2 and losing by only six, 93-87, on the road on January 27, a game in which the Giants cut a 16-point second-half deficit down to three with 18 seconds remaining.  Since that time, Keystone has won four of its final seven games, including two on the road.

Tip-off for Monday's game at The Mirenda Center in Aston is set for 8:00 p.m.

Neumann news & notes:  The Knights bring an 18-7 overall record into Monday's game…they finished 13-5 in the CSAC and earned the number three seed…Knights are 11-1 at home this year, with their only loss an 81-79 decision to Gwynedd Mercy on February 14…balance on offense has been the key to the Knights' success this year; five players currently average in double figures, led by senior guard Tyaire Hudson (16.9) and followed by freshman forward Aaron Johnson-Chavis (14.7), junior forward Gemil Holbrook (14.6), sophomore guard Raquan Brown-Johnson (14.0), and senior guard Billy Cassidy (12.8)…Johnson-Chavis is also averaging 9.9 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game…in the latest CSAC statistical rankings, Neumann leads the conference in rebounding (41.9) and scoring margin (+13.0) and is second in scoring (87.5), field goal percentage (.496) and field goal percentage defense (.413).

Keystone news & notes:  Giants will be making their first CSAC playoff appearance since 2014, which was against, coincidentally, Neumann and was also played in Aston…Keystone leads the CSAC in 3-point field goals made per game (12.4) and offensive rebounds per game (12.7)…Giants are 6-7 on the road this year…Keystone's 11 wins to date are the most for the program since 2014…in a 91-80 victory over Neumann at home in December, junior guard JT Bennett (Kansas City, Kan./Washington) led four Giants in double figures with a game-high 22 points and sophomore center John Kirkpatrick (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast), senior guard Mark Gilliam (Philadelphia, Pa./High School of the Future) and sophomore guard Austin Smith (Titusville, Fla./Florida Air Academy) chipped in 15, 13, and 11 points, respectively, while Hudson led five Knights in double figures with 19 points and Cassidy finished with 14…in both games against Neumann this year, the Giants have made a season-high 14 3-point field goals (Keystone also made 14 against Immaculata on Feb. 10)…Keystone is 5-4 in games in which it makes at least 10 3-pointers…junior guard Mark Perry (Harrisburg, Pa./Steelton Highspire) is 9-for-9 from the field in his last two games and currently leads the Giants in field goal percentage accuracy (.624); a mid-semester transfer from Millersville University, Perry has scored in double figures in 10 of 13 games and has recorded seven 'double-doubles' in points and rebounds…Bennett is 68 of 76 (.895) from the free throw line this year, which is second in the CSAC behind Thomas Swartz of Marywood's total of .940 (94 of 100)…a win by the Giants Monday evening would put them into Wednesday's semifinal game against top-seeded Cabrini University in Radnor, Pennsylvania.
