LA PLUME, PA- Former Keystone College men's basketball coach, Nevada Smith, has been named the new head coach of the Siena University men's basketball program, the school announced earlier this week.
Smith, who led the Giants for two full season from 2011-13, becomes the 20th head coach in Siena program history after spending the past several years coaching at both the Division I and professional levels. During his time with Keystone, Smith guided the Giants to a 39-16 overall record and helped elevate the program during his tenure in La Plume. Smith's success at Keystone marked an important step in his coaching career, that has since given him the opportunity that included stops in the NBA G League and on the staffs of multiple Division I programs.
Recently, Smith spent five seasons at Marquette, coaching under head coach Shaka Smart, including the last three as Smart's assistant coach. During his time with Marquette, Smith helped the Golden Eagles reach four NCAA Tournament appearances and assisted with one of the most successful stretches in program history.
Before Smith's tenure at Marquette, he served as the Director of Player Development at Texas, during the 2020-21 season. Smith helped the Longhorns capture the Big 12 Tournament Championship and rise into the national top five rankings.
Smith also brings professional coaching experience to Siena, having spent five seasons as a head coach in the NBA's G League, coaching both the Rio Grande Valley Vipers and the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Across all of those stops, Smith compiled a 135-116 overall record.
Smith began his basketball career as a player at Bethany College, scoring 1,255 points, and finishing his career as the program's all-time leader in made three-pointers.
