La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College celebrated its first home wrestling match in 25 years on Thursday night, taking on the University of Scranton before a large in spirited crowd in the Gambal Athletic Center, but dropped a 39-6 decision to the Royals.
Ryan Celenza (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) and
Charlie Johnson (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) picked wins for the Giants in the match that was preceded by a reception for alumni and friends along with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the return of varsity wrestling to the campus.
Scranton (1-0) opened the match with a Nick DePierro pin at 125 pounds, but Keystone (0-3) got back-to-back decision from Celenza and Johnson at the 133 and 141 weight classes to level the match at 6-6.
John Sheedy posted a major decision win at 149 pounds to put Scranton ahead for good. Ian Evans and Andrew Gombas followed with tight decisions over
Zack LeBarron (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) and
George Stilgenbauer (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) at the 165 and 174 weight classes, and the Royals closed the match with a pair of pins, a technical fall, and a forfeit to close out the final score.
Keystone will return to action on Saturday at the NY/PA Duals hosted by Mount Saint Vincent College starting at 12:00 p.m. in Riverdale, New York.
