Wrestling to Debut on Sunday Before Hosting Alumni Night on November 10

Keystone will wrestle at Bloomsburg this Sunday before hosting Scranton on Thursday

La Plume, Pa. – After a 25-year hiatus, Keystone College wrestling is just days away from returning to the mat as a varsity team for the Giants.  Keystone will open the 2016-17 season this coming Sunday, November 6, at the Bloomsburg University Duals before competing in its home opener on Thursday, November 10 which will be Alumni Night and feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the return of wrestling to Keystone.

Keystone's first season at the NCAA Division III level commences this Sunday as the Giants travel to Bloomsburg University where they will compete against a pair of Division I programs in Davidson College and the host Huskies in dual meet action.  Keystone will take on Davidson starting at 12:00 p.m. in Bloomsburg's Nelson Field House before grappling with the Huskies at 4:00 p.m.

Next Thursday, November 10, Keystone will host its first home meet of the season, taking on the University of Scranton as the Giants celebrate the return of wrestling to campus with Alumni Night in the Gambal Athletic Center.  A welcome reception will be held from starting at 6:00 p.m. followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:00 p.m. in the Gambal Center.  The competition between the Giants and Royals is slated to follow starting at 7:30 p.m.

To RSVP for next Thursday's reception, please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement at alumnirelations@keystone.edu or 570-945-8168.

From 1961-1991, Keystone was known as one of the best small college wrestling programs in the country.  Led by legendary coach Larry Fornicola, the Giants produced three National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national champions: Dick Keefe (1967), Neil Duncan (1970) and Bill Kametz (1973).

The wrestling program was discontinued at Keystone following the 1990-91 season due to a lack of similarly sized colleges competing in the sport at the time, but has been reintroduced as an NCAA Division III program this year.

Head coach Steve Mytych, who enjoyed an outstanding career at Division I Drexel University, is working hard to bring the Keystone wrestling program back to national prominence.  Coach Mytych brought in 11 strong wrestlers since taking over the resurgent program in March and is looking to lead the Giants to quality season in the program's first year of competition at the NCAA Division III level.
