La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College's season-opening game against Morrisville State College will be played in memory of Jamie L. Roberts, a former Division III student-athlete and coach who tragically passed away on June 13, 2014, while on a cross-country bike ride to raise funds and awareness for the fight against cancer. All proceeds from Wednesday night's game, which starts at 6:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center, will go directly to the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults.
Keystone's women's basketball team will be accepting donations on Tuesday and Wednesday in the cafeteria and will also have a donation table set up at Wednesday's game. Keystone's Colleges Against Cancer will also assist in collecting donations on Wednesday.
The Giants and Mustangs will wear warm-up shirts in memory of Roberts, who coached with current Keystone head coach
Meghan Sullivan as an assistant coach at The Catholic University of America, for Wednesday's non-conference contest.
Roberts was in her third season as staff member and assistant coach at Catholic when she set out on a fundraising bike ride from Baltimore, Maryland to Portland, Oregon as part of the 4K For Cancer ride which raises money for the Ulman Cancer Fund. Sadly, Roberts was struck by a vehicle in Scott County, Kentucky and succumbed to her injuries at just 24 years of age.
Roberts was a three-sport standout at St. Mary's College of Maryland, excelling on the basketball court while also playing on the women's lacrosse and women's soccer teams. She was a team captain in basketball and soccer and a member of the Capital Athletic Conference All-Academic Team.
On the court, she was an All-CAC Second Team honoree as a senior after leading the team in scoring and ranking third on the squad in rebounding and assists. She also led the lacrosse and soccer teams to CAC semifinal appearances.
A native of Rockville, Maryland, Roberts graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in economics from St. Mary's in 2011 after being honored with the Athletic Director's Award and being named the Female Athlete of the Year. In addition to serving as an assistant coach at Catholic, she also coached at the Five-Star Basketball in Rockville.
The 4K for Cancer program is run by the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, an organization that works "to support, educate, connect, and empower young adult cancer survivors."
