The Keystone College women's basketball team will look to slow down Marywood University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match-up Wednesday, January 24, at the Gambal Athletic Center in LaPlume starting at 6:00 p.m.
In her second season as head coach,
Meghan Sullivan is relying on a youth movement that includes five freshmen and a sophomore among its 10 players on the roster.
The Giants do, however, have one senior on the roster—
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton)—who has reached a number of personal milestones recently.
Hodanich scored the 500
th point on her career in last Saturday's 66-56 loss at Cairn University. She finished with a game-high 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. On Monday, Hodanich followed that up with a game-high 14 points in a hard-fought 66-52 loss at Gwynedd-Mercy, a game in which the Giants led after three periods of play.
In addition to reaching her scoring milestone Saturday, Hodanich also recorded the 100
th steal of her career and enters Wednesday's game against Marywood needing only one assist for 100 in her career. So far this season, she is shooting a career-best in field goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage.
Sophomore center
Maddy Moro (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) has been putting up Dennis Rodman-like numbers on the boards, pulling down at least 10 rebounds in her last five games, including a career-high 23 against Cairn last Saturday and 20 against Gwynedd-Mercy Monday. Defensively, she has blocked 12 shots in her last five games, including a 6-block effort against Gwynedd-Mercy.
Freshman
Autum Kitajima (Williamsport, Pa./Wellsboro Area) and
Faith Shiffer (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) continue to pick up valuable playing time in the backcourt. Kitajima scored a season-high 11 points against Gwynedd-Mercy, eclipsing her previous high of nine points against King's College on November 21, while Shiffer has seen action in all 16 games this year and is tied for second on the team in starts with 13.
The Giants, unfortunately, meet a Marywood team that has been on a roll since opening the season 0-4. And even though the Pacers are coming off a 74-69 loss to Cabrini Sunday, they've won their previous six games and are just 1/2 game behind Gwynedd-Mercy for first place in the North division of the CSAC and just one game and a half behind Cabrini for the best overall league record.
In the first meeting between the two teams on January 9 at the Insalaco Arena in Scranton, the Pacers overcame a 31-26 halftime deficit en route to a 70-57 victory. Freshman Erika Bistran led Marywood with 18 points while Hodanich paced all scorers with 19 for the Giants.
After Wednesday's game, Keystone will take on the University of Valley Forge in a non-conference game this Saturday, January 27, in Phoenixville, Pa. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
