La PLUME, Pa. - Feb. 8, 2019 - First-year head coach
Kristina Danella has been around coaching for six years. But the job she has at Keystone keeping the team together after some top players quit has been remarkable.
"We just had to stay focused, had to stay together as a team. I mean if someone does not want to be here that is on them and not on us. So I would rather have kids that want to play and they have been doing a really good job event though we have on six kids that really only see a lot of playing time. They are playing really, really well. They play a lot of minutes we have been trying to structure practice so that they are not too tired during the games because they do play a lot of minutes in the games," said
Kristina Danella- Keystone College women's basketball coach.
With subtraction has come addition. The Giants welcomed in freshman
Mac Oribello (San Diego, Calif./Westview) from California in the second semester and she has increased her scoring average in every game. The Giants can shoot the ball as well as any team in the conference.
"I would say we are all really good three-point shooters to be honest. We shoot a lot in practice and it just shows in the games,"
Mac Oribello (San Diego, Calif./Westview) - Keystone College Freshman said.
"Everyone mostly shoots, we take turns if someone is not hitting this game someone else will pick them up. If we are not hitting we just give it up to someone who is hitting,"
Faith Shiffer (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove)- Keystone College Sophomore said.
"We like to play fast and our defense fuels our offense so that is always huge and like I said before if we shoot the ball well we are pretty good," said Danella.
Next Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m., Keystone will host Cairn, a team they already beat by seven points earlier this season. If the Giants can win that game they will have a good shot on the 2nd seed in the upcoming CSAC playoffs.
"That is going to be really, really big to get a first round bye and then hopefully just one game until the championship," Kristina said.
"As a sophomore I never won a CSAC so it would be very interesting to win one," said Shiffer.
And quite an accomplishment in a season of change.
