Angelo Mecca’71 was honored for his outstanding athletic career as a member of Keystone Junior College’s baseball team.  A two-year standout for the Giants, Angelo brought national attention to Keystone’s baseball program as he helped establish the foundation for the success the Giants’ baseball program continues to enjoy to this day.

Angelo was a team captain for the 1970 and 1971 Keystone squads and starred in all areas of the game, exceling as a hitter, serving as the pitching staff’s ace, and leading the Giants defensively as an outfielder.

Angelo became the first player in Keystone history to earned National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-American honors following an outstanding season in 1971.  That year, he batted a remarkable .500 to break the previous school record while also posting a perfect 4-0 record on the mound as a pitcher.

With his performances at the plate and on the mound, Angelo led Keystone to its first NJCAA Region 19 Tournament appearance in 1971 as the team posted a near-perfect, 12-1 record that spring.

Angelo finished his two-year career at Keystone with a .437 batting average to break the program’s all-time record.  He also led all Giants’ pitchers in wins during that span as Keystone posted a remarkable, 22-4 overall record in his two seasons in the blue and orange.

Angelo was drafted in the seventh round of the 1970 MLB draft by the Chicago Cubs and later by the California Angels, but opted to continue his education at the University of Scranton.

After graduating from Scranton with a degree in elementary education in 1973, Angelo was a teacher for 35 years in the Dunmore School District, teaching grades 4-5.

He also was a softball coach with the Dunmore School District before his retirement but remains active in the sport as an umpire, having now umpired games in Northeastern Pennsylvania for the past 35 years.
