Carey Nemeth ’83 was recognized for his excellent career as a member of Keystone Junior College’s baseball team which continued at the Division I and professional levels.  His offensive prowess helped him re-write record books while carrying the Giants to one of their most successful two-year runs of the time.

Playing under Keystone Hall of Fame head coach Mike “Doc” Mould, Carey was a two-time NJCAA All-Region XIX honoree, earning the distinction both years of his career with the Giants.  During that time, he set new all-time school records for doubles with 16 and triples with eight.

After posting the second-best single-season batting average in program history with an outstanding .446 mark in 1982, Carey established a new Keystone record with five home runs during the 1983 campaign.

Over his two-year career, Carey led the Giants to an impressive 42-10 overall record including a school record 23 wins in the 1983 season.  The Giants also reached the NJCAA Regional Final Four for the first time in program history in 1983.

Carey earned a scholarship to play at Division I James Madison University where he set single-season program records for home runs with 18 and RBI with 67 while also posting a program-best 27-game hitting streak.

He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals following his junior year, but declined the offer and returned to James Madison where he would finish his collegiate career by leading the Dukes to 62 wins in his two seasons with the program.

Carey, who spent summers playing for the Allentown Wings of the Atlantic Baseball League and for Wareham in the Cape Cod Baseball League, was drafted again by the St. Louis Cardinals following his senior year at James Madison as he selected in the 11th round of the 1985 MLB Draft.

He would go on to play three seasons in the Cardinals’ organization with stints at Erie in the New York-Penn League and Savannah in the South Atlantic League.
