Hall of Fame
Nicholas Scandale ’48 is honored for his outstanding athletic career at Keystone Junior College where he excelled as a member of the football team, while also playing basketball for the Giants. Nicholas came to Keystone after serving his country in World War II as a member of the Army.
A two-year standout for football team, Nicholas was a member of Keystone’s last football team in 1948. During that season, he excelled on the gridiron and helped lead the Giants to three wins during the season. In a season-opening loss to Dickinson Junior College, Nicholas scored Keystone’s lone touchdown of the game on a 50-yard reception. He would again reach the end zone in a victory over Wyoming Seminary.
Nicholas scored the final touchdown in Keystone football history in the 1948 season finale against King’s College on a sensational 47-yard run to account for the Giants’ lone score in a 12-7 defeat.
Nicholas also printed his name in Keystone athletics history on the basketball court, scoring the first-ever basket in Brooks Gym (now Brooks Theatre) on a layup. As a member of the men’s basketball team, he scored 44 points during the 1947-48 season.
After his time at Keystone, Nicholas moved on to Penn State University where he appeared in two exhibition games for the Nittany Lions football team, playing against Bucknell and Duquesne. Nicholas would go on to earn a bachelor of science degree in engineering from Penn State.
Nicholas founded the Scandale Construction Company where he continues to serve as the president of the company. He is also active in the local community with UNICO and the Columbus Day Association and is a member of the Scranton Country Club. Nicholas is married to his wife, Diane, and has two children: a son, Greg, and a daughter, Susan, and twin grandchildren.
