Lois Smith Bagley ’46 is recognized for her outstanding accomplishments in basketball and field hockey.

Lois was one of a relatively small group of women who pioneered intercollegiate athletics opportunities for women at Keystone and in higher education in general during a time when women’s involvement in organized sports was not widely accepted.

In 1944-45 and 1945-46, Keystone sponsored varsity athletic competition for women in two sports; field hockey and basketball.  Lois was a standout performer for two years in both sports.

As a freshman field hockey player in 1944, Lois played a key role in a successful season for the squad, one punctuated by a pair of victories over Marywood College.  That year the women’s basketball team put together their largest and most competitive slates ever, with Lois quickly becoming a key member of the squad.  She was often looked upon for her dominating rebounding ability.

The following year she once again anchored both squads as they continued to play very competitive schedules.

Being an accomplished two-sport athlete was not the only thing Lois was known for on campus.  Her involvement in many other campus activities and organizations reflected her all around leadership qualities.  For two years she was a member of the NOKOMIAN editorial staff, the Keystonian editorial staff and the Keystone Women’s Organization, where she also served as president.  She was also an active member of the Orange and Blue Club, the service organization for women’s sports.

Lois graduated from Keystone in 1946 and went on to earn her bachelors degree in Library Science at Syracuse University.

Among the professional positions she has held include: Foreign language catalog librarian at Harvard Law School, assistant librarian at Keystone Jr College and as a high school librarian from 1969 until her retirement in 1993.

Lois has stayed active in both her local and Keystone communities, serving on the Dalton Library Board, Lithia Valley Co-op and the Keystone Open committee.
